What Is a Gong Bath?

If you've recently searched for gong bath, gong meditation, gong session, or sound bath in Hong Kong, you may be wondering what actually happens during one.

Despite its name, a gong bath has nothing to do with water.

Instead, it is an immersive gong meditation where you are surrounded by the powerful vibrations of symphonic gongs and complementary sound instruments. Rather than listening to music, you allow yourself to rest while layers of sound gradually fill the space around you.

At Kate Sound Studio in Hong Kong, gong baths are often combined with Tibetan singing bowls, crystal singing bowls, breathwork, mindfulness, aromatherapy, and guided meditation to create a deeply relaxing and highly personalized experience.

Whether you are looking to reduce stress, improve sleep, support your nervous system, or simply experience a meaningful wellness practice, a gong bath offers an invitation to slow down in a world that rarely does.

Why Is It Called a Gong Bath?

The word "bath" refers to being surrounded or immersed in sound.

Instead of bathing in water, you are bathed in waves of vibration.

As the gong is played, its rich tones expand through the room, allowing your attention to gently shift away from everyday thoughts and toward the present moment.

Unlike traditional meditation, there is nothing you need to achieve.

No special breathing technique.
No posture to perfect.
No previous meditation experience.

You simply lie down, breathe naturally, and receive the experience.

For many people, this is one of the first times they have truly allowed themselves to rest.

My Journey with the Gong

I actually began my journey with Tibetan singing bowls.

They were the first instruments I learned to play, and they remain an important part of every session I offer today.

Yet from the very beginning, I found myself drawn toward the gong.

I remember watching my teacher play and thinking, "One day, this will become my instrument."

When I finally learned to play it myself, everything changed.

The first vibration travelled through my entire body.

It wasn't simply a sound I could hear.

It was something I could feel.

"In that moment, I knew the gong would become the signature instrument of my practice."

Even today, every time I sit behind a gong, I feel the same sense of respect and fascination I felt during that very first lesson.

The Gongs I Work With

Today I work primarily with two symphonic gongs that beautifully complement one another.

One is a Paiste Symphonic Gong, admired for its rich, balanced resonance and remarkable depth.

The other is handcrafted by Matt Nolan, whose gongs are appreciated by sound practitioners around the world for their complex overtones, warmth, and unique tonal qualities.

I love moving between these two instruments because they each have their own personality.

Sometimes one naturally fits the energy of the session better than the other.

Just as every client is different, every gong has its own voice.

What Happens During a Gong Bath?

Every experience at Kate Sound Studio begins long before the first sound is played.

A typical private session may include:

Rather than following the same sequence every time, I adapt the session according to the individual.

Most of My Sessions Are Personalized Sound Baths

Although many people search specifically for gong baths, most of my private sessions are best described as personalized sound baths.

Rather than focusing on a single instrument, I combine Tibetan singing bowls, crystal singing bowls, symphonic gongs, tuning forks, mindfulness, breathwork, and guided meditation according to your needs and intentions.

Interestingly, I have noticed that many clients naturally connect with the Tibetan singing bowls before they fully connect with the gong.

The bowls often feel gentle, familiar, and grounding.

The gong usually invites people into a deeper, more expansive experience.

Because every person responds differently, I never assume which instrument will resonate most. Instead, I allow each session to unfold naturally.

Gong Bath vs Sound Bath

People often use these terms interchangeably.

A sound bath usually includes a variety of instruments such as Tibetan singing bowls, crystal singing bowls, gongs, chimes, tuning forks, and gentle percussion.

A gong bath or gong meditation places the gong at the centre of the experience while still allowing other instruments to complement the journey.

At Kate Sound Studio, I often blend both approaches to create a richer and more personalized experience.

Potential Benefits of Gong Meditation

What the research says

Why Personalization Matters

One thing I have learned over the years is that no two people arrive with the same needs.

Some people come feeling anxious.

Others are mentally exhausted.

Some are navigating burnout.

Others are moving through grief, major life transitions, or simply feeling disconnected from themselves.

A common misconception is that a gong bath is simply about lying down while someone plays a gong.

In my experience, it is much more than that.

A meaningful gong meditation begins long before the first note is played.

It begins with listening.

Listening to the person's story. Their breathing. Their current state. Their intentions.

Only then do I decide how the instruments can best support the experience.

I never follow exactly the same session structure.

Every experience is adapted according to what you need on that particular day.

For me, the instruments are important — but the real focus is the person receiving the experience.

Full Moon Gong Meditation

Over the years, I have found that the gong works particularly beautifully during Full Moon Gong Meditation sessions.

Whether someone connects with the symbolism of the full moon or simply appreciates taking time to reflect, many people describe feeling more emotionally aware during this period.

Personally, I enjoy how the depth and power of the gong seem to create space for slowing down, letting go, and beginning again.

For this reason, the gong naturally becomes the centrepiece of my monthly Full Moon Sound Bath and Gong Meditation experiences.
